LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

Nearly 14 million Americans who have been diagnosed with cancer are living in the United States. Although the rate of people who get cancer is going down, the overall number of people who have cancer is going up. The overall 5-year survival rates are approaching 70%, and evidence is showing that more emphasis needs to be placed on recommendations to enhance overall health. (CDC, 2016)

Cancer survivors often face many challenges as a result of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a nationally recognized program that helps cancer survivors reclaim their health and their lives, the Y completes the circle of support uniting or reuniting a family, friends, health professionals and the community. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA offers participants a safe haven to try new things and meet new people.  This program is our opportunity as an organization to help those that do not know where to turn and who are in personal need of support.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

This 12-week exercise program is focused on helping the cancer survivor at any point in their journey to come to the Y and participate in a group-based physical activity. The program is focused on meeting participants where they are physical, mentally and emotionally, and helping them progress by focusing on rebuilding strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance.

Class participants will experience:

  • 5 minute welcome and check in
  • Up to 20-30 minutes cardiovascular exercise (slowly building to this time)
  • Up to 20 minutes of strength training
  • 15 minutes cool down and peer to peer support

We provide this program at NO COST to the survivor through the generous donations of our community. If you would like to donate to support a survivor please click here.
