Volusia County – January 5, 2017 – The Volusia Flagler Family YMCA Presented by Halifax Health and the Live Your Life Well Series announce the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA 5k on Saturday, January 21, 2016 at 8:00 am at Aunt Catfish’s on the River 4009 Halifax Dr., Port Orange. The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA 5K provides needed funding to deliver this life-changing program at NO COST to cancer survivors through the generous donations from our community.
Nearly 14 million Americans have been diagnosed with cancer. Although the rate of people who get cancer is decreasing, the overall number of people who have cancer is rising. The overall 5-year survival rates are approaching 70%, and evidence is showing that more emphasis needs to be placed on recommendations to enhance overall health. (CDC, 2016)
Cancer survivors often face many challenges as a result of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a nationally recognized program that helps cancer survivors reclaim their health and their lives, the Y completes the circle of support uniting or reuniting family, friends, health professionals and the community. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA offers participants a safe haven to try new things and meet new people. This program is our opportunity as an organization and a community to help those that do not know where to turn and who are in personal need of support.
The LiveSTRONG at the YMCA program is a 12-week exercise program focused on helping the cancer survivor at any point in their journey to come to the Y and participate in group-based physical activity. The program is focused on meeting participants where they are physically, mentally and emotionally, and helping them progress by focusing on rebuilding strength, endurance, flexibility and balance.
Class participants will experience:
