LEARN HOW TO STAY SAFE IN AND AROUND WATER!
The Y’s FREE Safety Around Water program teaches children from 8–12 years old, and from all backgrounds, that water should be fun and not feared.
At the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA, we know that swimming is a life skill every child must learn to stay safe, secure and enjoy the water.
Safety Around Water is a 5-day introductory swim program for youth ages 8–12 years-old. Each day, children will enjoy water safety education and character development lessons in a safe, structured environment.
YMCA Swim instructors will instill a love of the water while helping kids and parents build safety skills and knowledge.
Space is limited! Register in-house at the Membership Desk by May 15! FREE Water Safety Classes at all six of our family centers May 20- May 24.
May is National Water Safety Month
As part of National Water Safety Month in May, the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA encourages parents & guardians to take an active role in fostering a relationship between their children and swimming—beginning with water safety. Following are safety tips to practice when in and around the water:
- Only swim when and where there is a lifeguard on duty; never swim alone.
- Adults should constantly and actively watch their children.
- Inexperienced or non-swimmers should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
- Parents or guardians of young children should be within an arm’s reach.
- Children and adults should not engage in breath holding activities.
In addition to learning lifesaving water safety skills, swimming is a great way to increase physical activity. Swimming also motivates children to strive for self-improvement, teaches goal orientation and cultivates a positive mental attitude and high self-esteem. It also teaches life lessons of sport and sportsmanship, so that children can learn how to work well with teammates and coaches and how to deal with winning and losing.
