In announcing the selection, which is made by the DeLand YMCA Board of Directors, Gary Grumoli, Executive Director stated, “It is with great honor and pleasure that we announce the naming of Ben and Janelle Flowers as the recipient of the Jerry Frierson Award.  Ben and Janelle have been longstanding members of our Y family and have always been there in their support of our Y mission, members and this community. For the betterment of others in our wonderful city of DeLand, Ben and Janelle epitomize it through their actions. “

The award is named after the late Jerry Frierson, a former member of the DeLand YMCA Board of Directors who instrumental in many areas during his time as a board member.  The Flowers join an impressive list of Jerry Frierson Award recipients with the first recipients being Frank and Sally Ford and last year Earl and Patty Colvard.
